Performance Transfer

Companies today need to transfer an unprecedented amount of knowledge and skills from one generation to another. Traditionally that was done through formal training programs, but those programs in many cases take too long to develop and deliver—and the methods they use are not keyed into the incoming generation’s ethos, one that is centered on games and that is combined with a technology comfort level possessed by no prior generation.
Today’s workforce is undergoing a shift in its makeup. Traditionally most jobs were routine-based and transactional, meaning a focus on procedure and light on conceptual duties.
The shift over the last 15 years has been in the growing number of jobs requiring a set of complex, critical skills that rely heavily on tacit knowledge. Written procedures rarely exist and success lies in the employee’s ability to acquire and apply tacit knowledge in environments that are complex, ambiguous, loosely defined and ever changing.
Having this unwritten knowledge, which includes relationship building, problem solving, collaborating, listening, communicating with co-workers and interpreting complex data, is key in meeting the demands of these tacit jobs. Having an historical perspective and understanding of the cultural context is also a major advantage. This workforce is growing more than twice as fast as the traditional transactional workforce and in fact 70 percent of the jobs created since 2000 require complex tacit skills. Clearly this growth pattern requires new approaches to addressing workforce productivity and effectiveness issues.
To address these new demands, we have developed a Performance Transfer System that merges the strengths of our instructional design approach with the emerging technologies in order to address the unique learning needs and preferences of differing generations of employees.
