They also want to reduce their personal liability risk in relation to safety and environmental incidents, but don't know, should the need arise, how to effectively demonstrate they've done their due diligence in operator, trades and staff training.
Most North Pacific clients are Managers, Superintendents, Directors or Vice-Presidents. The companies they work for are at the heart of Canada's industrial growth and prosperity. They produce raw materials from coal to copper, logs and lumber to oil, paper and power. Some have been in business for many years and others have started up more recently.
Many of them are dealing with new regulations that impact jobs and the way they do business. New equipment and work processes have been introduced. New workers are being hired on a regular basis to replace retiring workers.
And meanwhile, fierce competition, both at home and from outside, is attacking the top line of the Profit and Loss statement, the revenue these companies generate. They are being forced to compete through value innovation. And innovation comes through people.
The need for worker training grows greater by the day.
These are companies that have traditionally conducted training off the back of an envelope with a few supporting Standard Operating Procedures as backup, but now must seek a more structured and defensible workplace training system.
If you are like the managers in many of these companies, you know about Bill C-45 (the "Westray Bill"), the federal legislation that amended the Canadian Criminal Code and became law on March 31, 2004. The Bill establishes new legal duties for workplace health and safety, and imposes serious penalties for violations that result in injuries or death. It provides new rules for attributing criminal liability to organizations, including corporations, their representatives and those who direct the work of others.
You are aware of that, but are not completely clear on how much due diligence needs to be done. You have measures in place, but still wonder how well your workplace training would demonstrate to the courts that you have taken all reasonable steps to train your workers.
Typically our clients possess expertise in a wide variety of industry processes and systems.
The expertise they do NOT possess, however, is the knowledge and skills required to systematically improve the job performance of their workers to get consistent, reliable results and stay competitive.
