Who we are

Thomas Quine, Associate

Thomas has worked for the last 20 years in the software and telecommunications industries, most recently as training and documentation manager for high-tech firms, including NCompass Labs (since acquired by Microsoft), and Infowave, an Internet firm specializing in wireless messaging. He is currently lead consultant with Documen Information Design, Inc. (www.documen.com), which has worked for several B.C. high-tech firms, including Corel, Navigata, Creo, eDispatch, Pivotal, and B.C. Hydro.

As a project manager, Thom has managed large teams for companies such as Cox Communications, AT&T Canada, BellSouth, Bell Canada, Nortel, and Ameritech.

In 1998/99, Thom managed a team of six technical writers at NCompass Labs. The suite of manuals created by the team went on to win “Best in Show” at the 1999 annual competition in technical communication sponsored by the STC Western Region. This annual award represents the highest achievement in technical communication in Western Canada.

Thom holds a B.A. from McGill University and a diploma in computer programming from Vancouver City College. He taught three core courses for the certificate program in technical communications at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, and currently teaches Information Design, and Fundamentals of Technical Writing, at the University of British Columbia.

A specialist in information design, Thom is the initiator of and a curriculum consultant for the Information Design program at the University of British Columbia. Thom gives regular seminars on Information Design in a variety of venues.

Recent projects include:

  • Creation of XML tutorials for Corel Corporation.


  • Curriculum design for System Engineers in the Enterprise Optical Network space for Cisco Systems


  • Team lead for project and technical documentation at the Snohomish Public Utility District of Everett, WA.


  • Project management for the front-end analysis of AT&T Canada’s largest-ever sales training initiative


  • Project management of blended e-learning, classroom, and field course in Pole Climbing, Ladder Handling, and Safety for Installers for Cox Communications


  • Project management of e-learning prototype course in TCP/IP for Bell Canada


  • Technical communications team lead for the largest network management software project ever undertaken by Nortel Networks.
